White Paper on Domain Name Expansion (June 2005)

This white paper represents the views of the three commercial user constituencies within ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) – Commercial and Business Users (BC), Internet Connectivity and Service Providers (ICSPC), and Intellectual Property Interests (IPC). The paper sets out a case for an expansion of domain names. It considers ICANN's core values, previous expansions, alternative means of expansion such as a free-for-all and auctions, and concludes that the optimal solution is a market-driven approach to new domain names based on added value.  To view a pdf of this white paper, click here.
